Since the early 1980s, house music has pulsed through underground clubs, basement parties, and warehouse raves: a revolution on wax and wires, born in Chicago.
Established in 2024 and targeted to break ground in 2027, the Museum of House is a Chicago-based 501(c)3 non-profit built to honor that history.
Our mission is to preserve the history of dance music, honor its pioneers, and serve as an incubator for the artists, ideas, and culture it continues to produce.
Our vision is to become an international hub and the planet's definitive institution for dance music history and cultural education.
House got its name from the Warehouse, a first-of-its-kind Chicago club open in the West Loop from 1977-1982.
But "house" has its own meaning too: a home, a family, a place to belong. That's what we're building for lovers of dance music everywhere.
House music is often described by its quality of depth: the feeling of being pulled below the surface of a song into something like sacred communion.
For us, going deep means tracing house back to its source by building the world's most complete historical archive of that experience, because the floor has always been sacred, and it's never belonged to one city alone.
Our tagline, "the deepest in history", is a claim and a commitment. A claim that no institution has yet treated this music with the seriousness it deserves, and a commitment that this one will.
We measure ourselves by depth: how far back we reach, how widely we credit, and how truthfully we tell it. Anything shallower is a betrayal of the music.
Ultimately, the Museum of House serves to remind us that House has always been more than music; it’s a cultural movement and a way of life that keeps asking
